Roblox Dark Mode: How to Turn It On (Website, App and Chrome)

Roblox has its own dark theme, but it doesn't reach every Roblox page and it gives you no way to dim things further. Here's how to use the built-in setting, and how to finish the job in Chrome with the Dark Mode extension.

Quick answer

To get Roblox dark mode on the website, click the gear icon, open Settings → Browser preferences → Theme and choose Dark or System. In the Roblox app, the option is under Settings → Device preferences. For pages the theme misses, or to fine-tune brightness and contrast, install the free Dark Mode extension in Chrome and press Alt+Shift+D on roblox.com.

Does Roblox have a dark mode?

Yes. Roblox dark mode has been an official option since 2019, when Roblox announced its dark theme for the desktop site and the mobile app. The menus have moved since then; at the time of writing, this is where the switch lives:

  • roblox.com in a browser: log in, click the gear icon in the top-right corner, choose Settings, open Browser preferences and set Theme to Dark.
  • Roblox app on Windows and macOS: click More (the three dots) in the left menu, then Settings → Device preferences → Device level theme → Dark.
  • Roblox app on iPhone, iPad and Android: tap More → Settings → Device preferences → Device level theme and pick Dark.

Choosing System instead of Dark makes Roblox follow your device or browser color scheme, so it turns dark only when your computer or phone is in dark mode. That's also the usual reason the Roblox dark theme seems to "not work": if your operating system is light, Roblox stays light.

The built-in theme mainly covers the core site: navigation, menus, settings and the main browsing pages. Other Roblox web pages, such as help articles, the newsroom and creator documentation, can use their own styling, and none of them let you lower brightness, raise contrast or add a warm tint. That's where a browser-level night mode such as the Dark Mode extension helps.

How do I make Roblox Studio dark?

Roblox Studio is a desktop program, not a web page, so no browser extension can change it. Use its own setting instead: open Studio Settings (Alt+S on Windows, ⌥+S on Mac), type theme into the search field at the top of the window and choose the dark theme. Roblox describes this in its Studio setup guide.

The same goes for the games themselves. Experiences run in the Roblox Player or the Roblox app and draw their own graphics, so a game's colors are up to its creator. The Dark Mode extension works on what you open in Chrome: roblox.com, its game pages, profiles, groups and other Roblox sites in a browser tab.

How to enable Roblox dark mode in Chrome with the Dark Mode extension

These steps darken roblox.com and other Roblox web pages in Chrome, or in any Chromium browser that installs extensions from the Chrome Web Store.

  1. 1

    Install the Dark Mode extension

Open the Dark Mode page in the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome. It's free. Pin it from the puzzle-piece menu so the icon stays on your toolbar.

  2. 2

    Open Roblox in a tab

Go to roblox.com and sign in as usual. The extension works on regular web pages, so the home page, game pages, the avatar shop, groups and profiles all count.

  3. 3

    Switch dark mode on

Click the extension icon and flip the big On/Off switch, or press Alt+Shift+D. The page is redrawn with a dark background and light text.

  4. 4

    Tune Brightness, Contrast and Sepia

Use the sliders in the popup. Lower Brightness takes the edge off late at night, a little extra Contrast keeps small text sharp, and Sepia adds a warmer tone.

  5. 5

Choose where and when it runs

Use the site list ("Invert listed only" or "Not invert listed") to decide which sites go dark, and press Alt+Shift+A to add or remove Roblox. You can also set active hours or turn it on after sunset.

Are there other ways to make Roblox dark?

The extension isn't the only way to get a black background on Roblox. Here's how the other options compare:

  • Roblox's own Dark theme. Start here. It's free, it's built in and it's designed by Roblox, so the core pages look exactly as intended. Its limit is coverage and control: you can't dim it, and pages outside its reach stay light.
  • Chrome's dark theme. Setting Chrome to dark under Settings → Appearance only changes the browser frame: tabs, toolbar and menus. The page itself is still drawn the way the website styles it.
  • Chrome's "Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents" flag. The experimental switch at chrome://flags forces dark colors on every website at once. It's all or nothing: no per-site list, no brightness or contrast sliders, and as an experiment it can change or disappear in a future Chrome version.
  • Your operating system's dark mode. If you set Roblox's theme to System, turning on dark mode in Windows, macOS, iOS or Android also switches Roblox. That doesn't affect sites that don't support a dark theme.

Roblox dark mode not working? Quick fixes

  • Avatars, thumbnails or game icons look inverted. Open the extension settings and switch the generation mode to Dynamic (the default) or Filter+, which preserves color saturation. Both keep images looking natural while the page goes dark.
  • A Roblox page stays white. Roblox may be excluded by your site list. Press Alt+Shift+A to toggle the current site, then reload the tab. Also check that "Only for" isn't limiting your settings to another website.
  • Colors look odd with Roblox's Dark theme on. If you already use the built-in theme, either set Roblox back to Light and let the extension handle it, or exclude roblox.com from the extension with Alt+Shift+A. Pick one, not both.
  • Some pages can't be darkened at all. Pages protected by the browser, such as chrome:// pages and the Chrome Web Store, are off-limits to every extension.
  • Your game or Studio didn't change. That's expected: they are apps, not web pages. Use the in-app theme settings described above.

How to turn off dark mode on Roblox

To turn off the extension everywhere, press Alt+Shift+D or flip the On/Off switch in the popup. To turn it off for Roblox only, use the per-site button in the popup ("Change mode on current site") or press Alt+Shift+A while you're on roblox.com.

To switch off Roblox's own dark theme, go back to Settings → Browser preferences → Theme on the website, or Device preferences → Device level theme in the app, and choose Light. In Roblox Studio, open Studio Settings, search for theme and select the light theme.

Why use dark mode on Roblox?

Late-night browsing

Looking for a new game or checking messages after dark is easier when the page doesn't flash white across the room.

Game pages and the avatar shop

Thumbnails and item art stand out against a dark background, without the glare of a white page.

Creator docs and guides

If you build experiences, the documentation and guides you read in Chrome can match your dark Studio window.

Comfort on bright screens

Many players find a dark theme more comfortable on large, bright monitors.

Best Dark Mode settings for Roblox

Dynamic mode for colorful pages

Roblox is full of thumbnails and avatars. Dynamic (the default) or Filter+ keeps their colors natural.

Brightness and Contrast

Lower Brightness slightly for night sessions and add a touch of Contrast so small text stays crisp.

Sepia for evenings

A little Sepia gives the dark theme a warmer tone that many people prefer late in the day.

Site list

Choose "Invert listed only" to darken just the sites you pick, or "Not invert listed" to darken everything except them. Alt+Shift+A toggles the current site.

Schedule or sunset

Set active hours or "Activate after sunset at location" so Roblox goes dark automatically in the evening.

Follow the system

"Use system color scheme" turns the extension on when your operating system is in dark mode.

Frequently asked questions

Is Roblox dark mode free?

Yes. Roblox's built-in Dark theme is free for every account. The Dark Mode extension is free too, with all core features on the free plan; see pricing for the optional Pro upgrade.

Why is Roblox still white after I picked the dark theme?

If you chose System, Roblox follows your device or browser, so it stays light while your OS is light. Select Dark to force it. For pages the theme doesn't cover, use the Dark Mode extension.

Can the extension make Roblox games or Roblox Studio dark?

No. Games run in the Roblox app and Studio is a desktop program, so a browser extension can't reach them. Use the theme setting inside the Roblox app and inside Studio Settings instead.

Does it work in Edge, Brave or Opera?

Yes. Dark Mode works in Chrome and Chromium browsers that install Chrome Web Store extensions, including Edge, Brave, Vivaldi and Opera (via "Install Chrome Extensions"). See our Brave dark mode guide. It's desktop only.

Is there a keyboard shortcut for Roblox night mode?

Press Alt+Shift+D to toggle the extension and Alt+Shift+A to add or remove the current site from your list (on Mac, ⌥+⇧+D and ⌥+⇧+A). You can change both at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.

Can I get Roblox dark mode on my phone?

Yes, through the Roblox app: More → Settings → Device preferences → Device level theme → Dark. The Dark Mode extension itself runs only in desktop browsers.

The bottom line

Roblox dark mode is a two-part job: turn on the built-in Dark theme on the website and in the app, and use Studio's own theme setting for development. For everything the theme misses, or when you want control over brightness, contrast and timing, the free Dark Mode extension darkens any Roblox page in Chrome.
