Does Yahoo have a dark mode?

Partly. Yahoo dark mode exists, but it is not one switch that covers all of Yahoo. A few products have their own setting, and each one is configured separately:

• Yahoo Mail on the web. In the new Yahoo Mail, click the More options icon, choose Settings, then Appearance. Under Light/Dark mode pick Light, Dark or Automatic, then refresh your mailbox. Automatic follows the time of day and your device settings (Yahoo Help).
• Yahoo Mail app. Tap your profile icon, open Settings, tap Dark mode and choose System default, Light mode or Dark mode (Yahoo Help).
• Yahoo Finance. Click your profile icon in the upper-right corner, choose Appearance and select Light mode, Dark mode or Device default (Yahoo Help).

Outside those products, Yahoo does not document a dark theme for its homepage, Yahoo Search, Yahoo News or Yahoo Sports, and your Mail setting does not carry over to them. That is the gap a browser extension fills.

Why does Yahoo stay white even when Chrome is dark?

Switching Chrome or your operating system to a dark theme only recolors the browser frame: tabs, toolbar and menus. The page itself is drawn by Yahoo's own styles, so a site without a dark theme keeps its white background no matter how dark the browser around it is. To make Yahoo News or Yahoo Search dark you need something that rewrites the page colors, which is exactly what the Dark Mode extension does.

How to enable Yahoo dark mode in Chrome with the Dark Mode extension

These steps give you a dark theme on any Yahoo page, including the ones without a native setting.

   Install Dark Mode from the Chrome Web Store

   Open the Dark Mode page in the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome. It's free, and the same listing works in Edge, Brave, Vivaldi and other Chromium browsers that accept Chrome Web Store extensions.

   Open the Yahoo page you want to darken

   Go to Yahoo Search, Yahoo News, Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Fantasy or the Yahoo homepage. Pin the extension to the toolbar from the puzzle-piece menu so it is always one click away.

   Turn dark mode on

   Click the Dark Mode icon and flip the big On/Off switch, or press Alt+Shift+D (⌥⇧D on a Mac). The page switches to a dark background with light text right away.

   Tune Brightness, Contrast and Sepia

   Yahoo News and Sports pages are packed with photos and small type, so adjust the Brightness, Contrast and Sepia sliders until headlines are comfortable to read. Grayscale is there too if you want fewer distracting colors.

   Decide how Yahoo Mail should be handled

   If you already use Yahoo Mail's own Dark setting, add mail.yahoo.com to the site list with Alt+Shift+A so the extension leaves it alone. If you prefer one consistent look, keep Mail on Light and let the extension darken it like every other page.

   Automate it (optional)

   Set active hours, choose Activate after sunset at your location, or turn on Use system color scheme so Yahoo goes dark whenever your computer does.

Other ways to make Yahoo dark (and their limits)

• Yahoo's own settings. The Mail and Finance dark themes look great and are the first thing to try on those pages, but they only cover those products and need to be set separately on each device.
• Chrome's dark theme or your OS dark mode. They darken the browser interface, not Yahoo's pages. They do help Yahoo Mail when it is set to Automatic, because Automatic follows your device settings.
• Chrome's experimental force-dark flag. The "Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents" flag inverts every website at once. It is all-or-nothing, has no per-site exceptions or brightness controls, and can render some pages oddly.
• The Yahoo Mail mobile app. On phones, use the app's Dark mode setting. The Dark Mode extension is for desktop browsers only.

Yahoo dark mode not working? Quick fixes

• Photos or logos look inverted. Open the extension settings and switch the theme engine to Dynamic (the default) or Filter+, which preserves color saturation.
• A Yahoo page stays white. The site may be on your list in the wrong mode. Press Alt+Shift+A to add or remove it, and check whether the list is set to "Invert listed only" or "Not invert listed".
• Yahoo Mail looks washed out or double-dark. Yahoo's own Dark theme and the extension are both active. Keep one: either set Mail's Appearance to Light or exclude mail.yahoo.com from the extension.
• The page looks sluggish. Try the Static engine, which generates a simple, fast theme.
• Nothing happens on some pages. Browser-protected pages such as chrome:// pages and the Chrome Web Store cannot be darkened by any extension.

How to turn off dark mode on Yahoo

To turn off the extension everywhere, press Alt+Shift+D again or flip the On/Off switch in the popup. To switch it off only for one Yahoo site, use the per-site button in the popup or press Alt+Shift+A.

To turn off Yahoo Mail dark mode itself, go back to Settings → Appearance and choose Light, then refresh. In the Yahoo Mail app, open Settings → Dark mode and pick Light mode.
