Venmo Dark Mode: How to Get a Dark Venmo on the Web and on Your Phone

Venmo is mostly used on phones, but the website is handy for checking activity and statements on a bigger screen, and it's bright white. Here's how to get a dark Venmo in Chrome with the Dark Mode extension, and what to try in the app.

Quick answer

At the time of writing, venmo.com has no built-in Venmo dark mode setting. To make it dark in Chrome, install the free Dark Mode extension, sign in to Venmo and press Alt+Shift+D (or click the extension icon). Adjust Brightness and Contrast to taste. On your phone, check the Venmo app's settings or turn on system dark mode.

Does Venmo have a dark mode?

Not on the website, as far as we could find. At the time of writing, Venmo dark mode isn't an option on venmo.com: there's no theme or appearance setting in your account, and we found no official Venmo announcement or help article describing a dark theme. Users have been asking for one in app reviews for years, so if you searched "does Venmo have dark mode", you're in good company.

On a computer, that leaves a browser-level solution. The Dark Mode extension redraws the Venmo website with dark colors in Chrome and other Chromium browsers, and you decide which sites go dark and how dark they get. It's a desktop tool, so it covers venmo.com in your browser, not the mobile app.

Is there a dark mode in the Venmo app?

We couldn't confirm a documented dark theme switch in the Venmo app. Venmo has redesigned its app several times, and features can differ between versions and between iPhone and Android, so here's what to try:

  • Check the app first. Update Venmo from the App Store or Google Play, open the settings and look for an appearance, display or theme option. If your version has one, choose dark there.
  • Turn on system dark mode. On iPhone, go to Settings → Display & Brightness → Dark. On Android, open Settings → Display and turn on Dark theme (the wording varies by phone maker). Apps that support a dark appearance follow this setting automatically.
  • Use accessibility options as a fallback. Both iOS and Android offer color inversion in their accessibility settings. It's a blunt tool that can make photos and some icons look odd, but it works in any app.

How to enable Venmo dark mode in Chrome

These steps make the Venmo website dark in Chrome, or in any Chromium browser that installs extensions from the Chrome Web Store.

  1. 1

    Install the Dark Mode extension

Open the Dark Mode page in the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome. It's free. Pin the icon from the puzzle-piece menu so you can reach it in one click.

  2. 2

Sign in to Venmo on the web

Go to venmo.com and sign in with your email, phone number or username, then complete the verification code if Venmo asks for one. Your activity and account pages are ordinary web pages that the extension can restyle.

  3. 3

    Switch dark mode on

Click the extension icon and flip the big On/Off switch, or press Alt+Shift+D. Venmo is redrawn with a dark background and light text.

  4. 4

    Fine-tune the look

Use the Brightness, Contrast, Sepia and Grayscale sliders in the popup. A little extra Contrast helps with long transaction lists; lower Brightness suits late-evening sessions.

  5. 5

Choose where and when it applies

Use the site list to darken only the sites you pick, or everything except them; Alt+Shift+A adds or removes venmo.com. Active hours or sunset activation can switch dark mode on automatically.

Is it safe to use a dark mode extension on Venmo?

It's a reasonable thing to ask about any site that moves money. The Dark Mode extension only changes how colors are displayed in your own browser: it restyles the page locally and doesn't change what you send to Venmo. Its Chrome Web Store listing includes the developer's disclosure that it does not collect or use your data.

If you'd rather keep Venmo in its original colors anyway, switch the site list to "Not invert listed" and press Alt+Shift+A on venmo.com. Every other site stays dark and Venmo stays as it is.

Other ways to make Venmo dark

  • Chrome's dark theme. Choosing dark under Settings → Appearance mainly darkens the browser itself: tabs, toolbar and menus. Because the Venmo website has no dark theme of its own, the page stays light.
  • Chrome's "Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents" flag. This experimental setting at chrome://flags forces dark colors on every website at once. There's no per-site list and no sliders, and experimental flags can change or disappear in future Chrome versions.
  • Your phone's system dark mode. For the Venmo app, system dark mode or the app's own settings are the places to look (see above). Neither affects venmo.com on your computer.

Venmo dark mode not working? Quick fixes

  • Profile photos or icons look odd. Open the extension settings and try a different generation mode. Dynamic is the default; Filter+ preserves color saturation, which helps pictures keep their natural colors.
  • Venmo stays white. venmo.com may be excluded by your site list. Press Alt+Shift+A to toggle the current site and reload the tab, and check that "Only for" isn't applying your settings to another website.
  • Some pages can't be darkened. Pages protected by the browser, such as chrome:// pages and the Chrome Web Store, are off-limits to every extension.

How to turn off dark mode on Venmo

Press Alt+Shift+D or flip the On/Off switch in the popup to turn the extension off everywhere. To restore Venmo's normal look but keep other sites dark, click the per-site button ("Change mode on current site") while you're on venmo.com, or press Alt+Shift+A. On your phone, switch your system appearance back to light, or turn off dark mode in the Venmo app's settings if your version has the option.

Why use dark mode on Venmo?

Splitting bills at night

Settling up for dinner or rent late in the evening is easier when the page doesn't light up the room.

Reviewing your activity

Scrolling through payments and statements on a big screen is more comfortable for many people on a dark, well-contrasted page.

Managing several money apps

If your bank and PayPal are already dark in your browser, Venmo no longer stands out as the one bright tab.

Business profiles

If you take payments through a Venmo business profile and keep it open on your computer, it can match the rest of your dark workspace.

Best Dark Mode settings for Venmo

Contrast for amounts

Slightly higher Contrast makes amounts, names and dates easier to scan.

Dynamic or Filter+ mode

Both keep profile photos and icons looking natural while the page goes dark.

Brightness

Lower Brightness a touch for night use; raise it if gray text starts to look faint.

Site list

Use "Invert listed only" or "Not invert listed" to control exactly which sites go dark. Alt+Shift+A toggles venmo.com.

Follow the system

"Use system color scheme" turns the extension on whenever your computer is in dark mode, so Venmo matches your phone's habits.
